STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's cross country team will compete this weekend at the Central Connecticut State Mini Meet in New Britain, Conn. The race will be held at Stanely Quarter Park on Saturday. UConn will help prepare for the BIG EAST Championships to be held on October 30 at Jamesville Beach Park in Jamesville, N.Y., hosted by Syracuse University.
"We are not sending any of our top nine runners to the meet as we are in our final preparations for the BIG EAST Championships. The meet is an opportunity for those student-athletes who did not make that squad to finish up their season on a high note and look ahead to the indoor season," said cross country coach Andrea Grove-McDonough.
Last weekend, the Huskies sat their top competitors while competing at the Rothenberg Race in East Greenwich, R.I. Connecticut placed sixth out of seven teams. Senior Brittany Heninger (Bristol, Conn.) led the way for UConn. She finished the 5k race in 25th overall in 18:45.7.
The Huskies will compete against Sacred Heart, Stony Brook, Quinnipiac, Providence Collage, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Assumption and the University of New Haven.
"This an especially good opportunity for some of our more "mid-distance" oriented athletes to shine because the meet is only 3K compared to a 5K or 6k that we run throughout the rest of the season," added Grove-McDonough.
Last year, the Huskies placed third out of 14 teams at the CCSU Mini Meet. Senior Leah Andrianos (East Syracuse, N.Y.) led the way, placing 11th in 11:30.
