FAIRFIELD, Conn. - For the second-consecutive week, sophomore Courtney Dinnan (Hamden, Conn.) led the University of Connecticut women's cross country team with an 18:49 first place finish at the Fairfield Invitational. UConn won the invitational with 28 points, finishing ahead of Yale (34) and UMass (62). The Stags were fourth among the seven-team field.
Dinnan was the Huskies' top-finisher at the Bryant Invitational a week ago and was just ahead of teammate freshman Megan Jacoby (Endwell, N.Y.) on Saturday.
Jacoby finished the 5K race in 18:54, while senior Sara Leslie (Portland, Conn.) and freshman Kimberley Moran (Brightwaters, N.Y.) rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Huskies. Leslie, with a 9:14 time, placed fifth while Moran ran a 19:27 to finish 10th among the 89-runners competing.
"I was very happy with the overall effort of our team today at Fairfield and in particular with the team's victory over Yale," said distance coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "That's a team that we have not been able to even get close to the last few years, at least head to head, so for us to come away with a win that's pretty great for the team and our program.
"It was also great that we took the top two individual spots and had three runners in the top-five," said Grove-McDonough. "What is even more exciting is that we still have yet to compete at full strength this season and we are a very young team."
The Huskies season resumes on Sept. 26 when they travel to the University of Minnesota to compete at the Roy Griak Invitational.
