Three Huskies Nab All-BIG EAST Honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three members of the University of Connecticut softball team were named to the All-BIG EAST team Wednesday. Senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) earned second team honors while senior Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) was named to the third team.
This is the third time in her career that Truax has earned All-BIG EAST honors. In 2007 and 2008 she was named the BIG EAST Player of the year and was named to the first team, this is her first appearance on the second team. Truax ended the season second on the team with a .329 batting average driving in 24 runs and garnering 52 hits. She drew 11 walks on the season and capitalized on her time on the basepath stealing a team high 11 bases. She also lead the team with nine home runs.
In conference play, Truax led the team with a .333 batting average as one-third of her hits went for extra bases. She scored a team high 14 runs in BIG EAST conference play and drove in another eight.
Bothe Towers and Crossin earned their first All-BIG EAST honors this season. Towers earned second team honors after finishing the year with a team leading and BIG EAST eighth best batting average of .378. She finished the regular season leading her team in 13 batting categories including hits (62), runs (39), and total bases (97). Her on base percentage of .431 also lead the team. In the BIG EAST, Towers knocked out 25 hits, six for extra bases.
Crossin earned third team honors and she was the fourth Husky to do so. Her strong pitching this year kept UConn in the playoff race as she started the majority of the games in the final month of play. She pitched a career high 139.2 innings this year striking out an amazing 171 batters. She only allowed 41 earned runs for a 2.05 ERA and won a career high 11 games during the 2009 season.
In BIG EAST play, Crossin had a 1.54 ERA winning seven games in 16 appearances. She earned the first no-hitter of her career against Providence on May 2, the first no-hitter for a UConn player since the 2003 season. In her 81.2 innings of work she struck out 97 batters, holding her opponents to a .228 batting average.
Truax, Towers, Crossin and the rest of the Huskies will be in action on Thursday, May 7 in their first tournament game of the BIG EAST Championship when they take on No. 3 seed Louisville at 6:30 p.m.
