CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 6, 2009) - In their first game of the South Florida Tournament, the University of Connecticut softball team came out slugging and defeated St. Bonaventure in a 10-0 fashion. Sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) was perfect on the day with two doubles and a three-run homerun while senior Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) had two singles and a double.
The Huskies got started on the right foot when Towers got herself on base as the leadoff hitter for the third time this season. She crossed the plate on the next crack of the bat when Ortega recorded her second RBI of the season giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.
UConn continued to score in each of the innings that they got to the plate. In the second, senior Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) got herself on base via a walk, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Amy DeLuca (Somerset, Mass.), hit third on an illegal pitch and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field by junior Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.).
In the third, Towers got on for the second time in the game doubling to shortstop on a high fly ball that fell in-between the Bonnies players. She scored on a single by Ortega, who then crossed the plate after an error by the St. Bonaventure pitcher Sherri Thompson, turning her single into a run. With the bases clear, senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) singled to right field, stole second base and scored on senior Danielle Del Ponte's (Tewksbury, Mass.) double to left for the third run of the inning.
In the fourth, UConn scored started off the inning with a single by Roy. She moved up to second when sophomore Jess Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) also singled to left. Roy and Arremony both scored when Towers blasted her second homerun of the season, this time of the three-run kind. Ortega doubled for her third hit of the day and scored on UConn's second homerun of the inning, this time by Truax giving them their ninth and 10th runs of the game.
The Huskies shut down the St. Bonaventure offense for the fifth time during the day to win their second game of the season this time by the run-limit. Junior Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) pitched three-innings of scoreless softball striking out five. Freshman Jessie Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) came in for an inning of relief allowing just one hit and striking out three.
UConn is back in action Friday at 4:00 p.m. in the second half of their doubleheader against Loyola-Chicago.
