Bronx, N.Y. (Sept. 24) - The University of Connecticut women's cross country team placed 11th out of 23 teams at the Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday morning. The Huskies scored 319 points in the race for their 11th place finish.
UConn was led by junior Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.) who placed ninth in a time of 22:17.50 in a talented field. She also bettered her 2004 performance in the same meet by a minute. Senior Niamh Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) was the next Husky finisher in a time of 23:29.60, good for 55th place. The team captain was tripped by another competitor just 1000 meters into the race but regrouped and put in an outstanding performance after the nasty fall to help the Huskies.
Sophomore Orlaith Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) was 71st and freshman Kate Vaughan (Bethel Park, Pa.) finished in 75th place. Other Husky finishers included freshmen Keelan King (Scotia, N.Y.), Julie Vilord (Suffern, N.Y.) and Rebecca McCollum (Monroe, Conn.).
Cornell captured the race after placing all seven runners in the top 20.
The Huskies are next in action on Oct. 8 when they travel to Boston, Mass. for the New England Championship.
