STORRS, Conn. - For the first time this season, a pair of University of Connecticut volleyball players earned BIG EAST weekly honors on Monday. Rookie Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) was named the conference's Freshman of the Week while for the third time this season junior Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
This is the second time this season that Quayle has been acknowledged as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, earning the honor this time after posting her fourth career double-double at Seton Hall on Sunday. She also put forth a balanced effort in the Huskies' 3-2 victory at Rutgers on Saturday with eight kills, three assists, four digs and a block. In total, Quayle recorded 20 kills, seven assists and 15 digs in the 2-0 weekend for Connecticut. She aided fellow honoree in blocking with six.
Murray led UConn in both kills (32) and blocks (15) and was third on the team with a .221 hitting percentage over the two wins. She recorded a personal-best 17 kills against a BIG EAST opponent in the 3-1 victory at Seton Hall. Murray has been consistent at the middle hitter position throughout the season, tallying double figures in kills in 10 of the last 11 matches. She was named to the Honor Roll twice before this season (Oct. 5; Oct. 26).
The regular season wraps up with a pair of matches at Cincinnati on Saturday and at Louisville on Sunday. Both BIG EAST contests are set to start at 2 p.m. Entering the final weekend of regular season play, the Huskies are seventh in the standings with a 14-14 overall record and a 7-5 mark in conference action.
