STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's cross country team will be competing at the NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 14. The meet is hosted by Boston University and will take place at Franklin Park in Boston at 3:30 p.m.
The top-two teams from each region will earn automatic bids to NCAA Championship and there will also be 13 at-large bids that will be given to selected teams throughout the various regions. During the 2008 season, four teams from the Northeast Region qualified for the NCAA Championship.
"We want to finish in the top-15 on Saturday, which something that we haven't been able to do in the last few years," said UConn distance coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "That is important and obviously the higher up in the top-15 we can get the better. It will be a challenge to live up to our ranking but that is definitely our goal this weekend. The Northeast Region is loaded with talent and it's going to be a great battle between all the teams."
Leading the way for the Huskies this weekend are senior captain Sara Leslie and sophomore standout Christine Vogel, who have guided the UConn program to one of their most successful years this season.
Leslie has run consistently in the top-five for UConn this year and was the No. 1 runner for the Huskies at the New England Championship. For her efforts, she was named the BIG EAST Athlete of the Week to become UConn's first ever weekly conference cross country honoree. Vogel led the Huskies at the Penn State National, where the Huskies finished in ninth place as Vogel ran a 6k personal best by a two-minute margin.
