STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's cross country team has been ranked 10th in the Northeast Region in the first poll of the 2009 season.
It is the first time in several years that the program has made it into the rankings as the Huskies used a sixth place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota to prove that they belonged among the best in the region. UConn has also defeated some top teams in the Northeast to rank them as high as 10th this season after not being ranked on the preseason poll.
"I was very pleased to see us get the No. 10 ranking in the first week poll, mostly for the kids on the team, because they have been really working hard," said distance coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "I was not surprised to see us jump as high as 10th and having said that, we need to remember that rankings are only on paper and that the team still needs to execute when it counts. The NCAA Regional Championship is on Nov. 14 and we know rankings and predictions won't help us out there on the course, we have to bring our best performances."
The Huskies get an early opportunity to face three teams ranked ahead of them this weekend at the New England Championship in No. 9 Boston University, No. 8 Brown and No. 3 Boston College. That event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 12:30 p.m. in Boston, Mass.
