STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 31, 2008) – For the 10th time this season, the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team swept its opponent. The Huskies earned a 3-0 (25-15, 28-26, 25-22) victory over Seton Hall on Friday at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. UConn used a balanced scoring attack led by Chauntay Mickens (Germantown, Md.) for the fifth-straight match.
Mickens contributed nine kills to the Husky offense while Lauren Lamberti (Cary, Ill.) recorded eight with a match-best hitting percentage of .583. Four other UConn players had kills against the Pirates with the team hitting .290.
Connecticut (17-7, 6-3) cruised to a 25-15 victory in the first set, allowing Seton Hall to tie the set just three times. In the second set, the lead changed hands six times and the score was tied 10 times before the Huskies prevailed to a 28-26 win.
The Pirates rallied to a seven-point lead (14-7) in the third set before UConn was able to close the gap. A series of attacking errors by the Pirates combined with kills by Annie Luhrsen (Wheaton, Ill.), Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) and Mickens contributed to the Huskies scoring eight unanswered points, cutting the deficit to two-points (19-17).
Seton Hall and UConn exchanged points before Megan Frey (Chaska, Minn.) with a service ace and a Pirate attacking error would give the Huskies the 25-22 decision.
A pair of Pirates (12-12, 4-5) contributed double-digit kills with Rachel Thornquist and Sara Osmun leading the way with 15 and 11, respectively. UConn held Tricia Meyers to a .000 hitting-percentage. Meyers came in hitting .312 for the eighth-best clip in the BIG EAST.
The Huskies had 11 team blocks against Seton Hall with Murray sending back a match-best six. Frey and Mickens each had five block assists while Luhrsen had three.
UConn resumes BIG EAST play on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion taking on Villanova. The first 100 fans to arrive will receive a Husky Necklace.
