NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (September 15, 2007) – Freshman Chrissy Meagher (West Roxbury, Mass.) was the first to pass the finish line for the Huskies, as the University of Connecticut women’s cross country team took second place at the Ted Owens Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State, on Saturday afternoon.
"I was very impressed by our performance today," said head coach Bill Morgan." "Our women learned quite a bit about themselves today, wining individual battles that culminated in a great team finish."
The Huskies, who won the Blue Devil Invitational two weekends ago, finished in second behind Quinnipiac University, among the 13 teams. The Bobcats are ranked 11th in the region.
"We competed very well today, finishing second behind the 11th ranked team in the region and before both, UNH and Boston University, two teams that are also ranked very high," said distance coach Kim McGreevy. "I am proud of how we competed. We were able to regroup in the toughest mile and closed the race well at the end."
UConn had five athletes finish within the top-25 of the race, led by Meagher, as she finished in 11th (18:24) for the Huskies.
Co-Captain Kate Vaughan (Bethel Park, Pa.) came in 13th followed by Meghan Bowden (Tyngsboro, Mass.) in 14th place. Alasia Griebel (Bristol, Conn.) took the 18th spot while teammate Caitlin Cannon (West Hartford, Conn.) finished in 21st.
"I am very pleased with our performance today. We had some great top pack running and there were major improvements all across the board," said McGreevy. "Kate (Vaughan) and Keelan (King) showed great leadership on the course; cheering on teammates throughout the whole race while pushing themselves to the end."
Connecticut will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 for the Meet of Champions in Bronx, N.Y. Race time is set for 9:30 a.m.
