Women's Track Dominates UConn Select Invitational

STORRS, Conn. (April 21, 2007) - Two school records were broken as the University of Connecticut women's track team won in dominating fashion at the UConn Select Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Conn.
Senior Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.) broke her own school record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:30.12. Sophomore Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) broke a five-year old record in the javelin with a distance of 47.14m.
Junior Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) was a powerhouse at the meet, claiming three titles. She took first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.06 and tied for first in the high jump (1.70m). She then finished first in the triple jump (12.63m) and was the runner-up in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.60.
Sophomore Jessi Foreman (Wayland, Mass.) was a two-time winner on the day taking the 100m dash in a time of 11.59 and winning the 200m dash (24.01). Another multiple winner was freshman Tynisha McMillian (Stamford, Conn.) who won the shot put with a throw of 13.75m and took home the discus title (45.51m).
In the 400m dash, sophomore Alyssa Evering (Bel Air, Md.) was a first-place finisher in a time of 55.27. Senior Jen Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) won the long jump (5.77m) while junior Erin Donnelly (Barrington, R.I.) took top honors in the hammer throw with a distance of 51.27m.
UConn's two relay teams took home first as the 4x400m relay finished with a time of 3:49.69 with the 4x100m relay winning in a time of 45.62.
Freshman Carin Knight (New Rochelle, N.Y.) tied for first in the high jump with Highsmith (1.70) with sophomore Rachael Porter (Watertown, Conn.) rounding out top three in third with a distance of 1.65m.
Sophomore Jessica White (Middletown, Mass.) placed fourth in the 100m dash in a time of 12.55. Freshman Phylicia George (Markham, Ont.) and Evering went three-four in the 200m dash with times of 24.39 and 24.44, respectively.
Freshman Chanell Smith (Bronx, N.Y.) was a third-place finisher in the 400m dash (57.24). George went on to take third in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.66, while junior Kaitlyn Whitlock (Bethel, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 400m hurdles (1:01.24).
Martin also took second in the shot put with a distance of 12.80m.
The Huskies are back in action at the Penn Relays April 26-28 in Philadelphia, Pa.
