Swimming and Diving Ready for BIG EAST Championships
45 Huskies will participate at Conference Meet
STORRS, Conn. (February 12, 2007) – The University of Connecticut swimming and diving program is set to participate in the 2007 BIG EAST Conference Championships at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in Uniondale, N.Y. from February 14-17.
The four day meet will feature 45 swimmers and divers from UConn.
Junior Allison Coleman (New Canaan, Conn.) returns to defend her BIG EAST one-meter dive championship. Last year she was also named the BIG EAST Co-Outstanding Diver of the Year at the event.
The men’s team will look to best their seventh place finish in last years meet, while the women will work to improve on their sixth place spot from last year.
The Huskies boast some of the conference’s fastest swimmers heading into the Championships.
Abed Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) has the fourth best 50 free time on the season with a time of 20.53 achieved at the Terrapin Invitational. Kaaki also holds the fourth spot in the 100 free with his time of 45.00.
Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) currently holds the third best time in conference with a 200 butterfly time of 1:48.23.
Tristan Jones’ (Canberra, Australia) 200 IM time of 1:51.24 sends him to the conference meet with the fourth best time in that event.
Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) heads into the BIG EAST Championships with a 200 butterfly time of 2:02.06, granting her the second best time in the conference for that event.
Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) has the fifth best time in conference for the 200 IM with her time of 2:03.95 achieved at the Terrapin Cup. Shelps also has the fourth best time in the 400 IM at 4:22.94.
Day one of the meet will feature the men’s one-meter dive as well as the relay events. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. with the dive event and the relays are set to go off at 5:30 p.m.
