STORRS, CONN. (Dec. 6, 2007) - The University of Connecticut football team was presented with its 2007 BIG EAST Championship trophy on Thursday night at Gampel Pavilion during halftime of the UConn-Northeastern men's basketball game.
The entire team was recognized on the court along with several members of the coaching staff although several coaches, including Randy Edsall, are currently on the road recruiting.
In just its fourth year in the BCS circuit, the Huskies finished 5-2 in BIG EAST play to finish in a first place tie with West Virginia. It is UConn's first share of a conference championship since 1989 when the team finished in a three-way tie for the Yankee Conference Championship. The Huskies won or shared YanCon crowns in 1949, 1952, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1982, 1983, 1986 and 1989. UConn also won the Atlantic 10 Conference New England Division title in 1998.
The Huskies have gone 9-3 so far in 2007, tying for the most regular season wins in school history. UConn also won nine regular season games in 1998 and 2003 although the 1998 team won a school-record 10th game by defeating Hampton in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
This year's Huskies will also have a chance to win a 10th game when they travel to Charlotte on Dec. 29 to face Wake Forest in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Bank Of America Stadium, home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers and site of UConn's 2000 national championship in men's soccer.
