Swimming and Diving Capture First Place at Terrapin Cup
Huskies top three day meet after leading every day of competition
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (November 17, 2007) - The University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming and diving team both won the Terrapin Cup at the University of Maryland. The event took place over the course of three days.
UConn outdistanced nine teams on the men's side as it scored 700 points followed by Maryland with 609, William and Mary with 585, Richmond with 514.5, Villanova with 462 and Navy with 320.
On the women's side, UConn scored 955 points in the seven-team competition followed by West Chester with 800, Maryland with 697, William and Mary with 533, Drexel with 397 and Villanova with 227.
Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) continued her assault on the UConn record books with her fourth school record of the meet. She swam the 100 freestyle in 51.06, topping her own school record of last season.
Shelps had a total of four school record in the event -- the 50 freestyle in 23.56 (topping the mark of Hilliary Krug from 1997), the 200 IM in 2:07.73 (topping the mark of Ryan Smith from 200) and 400 IM in 4:20.79 (topping her own mark from last year) and the 100 freestyle.
Her performances in both IMs were NCAA "B cut" times.
Senior Courtney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.) also posted a NCAA "B cut" time in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.13.
Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec), Frisk Driscoll (Westport, Conn.), Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) and Tomaz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland) picked up first place finishes for the Huskies for the Huskies.
Davidson took first place and set the school record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.98 -- topping the mark of Bobby Folan from 2004.
Astiz swam the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.45. He was followed in second place by teammate John Hogan (Walkersville, Md.) and his time of 1:51.77.
Sobek took the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.03.
Driscoll led the pack in the 1650 freestyle clocking in at 15:50.29.
Courtney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.) and Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) took second place finishes in their respective events.
Haney took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.13.
Marianni earned second place in the three-meter dive with a score of 284.75.
The swimming and diving team's will return to the pool after the new year for a January 26 dual meet against Drexel and Rhode Island. The meet will take place at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium on the UConn campus and is set for a 1 p.m. start.
