Swimming and Diving Sweeps Husky Invitational
Huskies take first in 21 of the 28 events
STORRS, Conn. (October 13, 2007) - The University of Connecticut Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Team swept the season opening Husky Invitational meet by taking first-place in 21 of the 28 events on Saturday afternoon at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. Stony Brook, Southern Connecticut State University and University of Vermont all competed at the meet.
The UConn men scored a total of 924.5 points, while the women scored 849.
UConn also posted back-to-back top finishers in 15 events on the day.
Junior Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) led the men’s team with three first-place finishes. Astiz took home first place in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events as well as a first place finish in the 200 IM.
Freshman Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland) had wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, while fellow first year teammate Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) grabbed first in the 100 and 200 backstroke.
Also taking first place for the men was Frisk Driscoll (Westport, Conn.), Nick Conrad (Olney, Md.), John Hogan (Walkersville, Md.) and Jules Alexandre (Wallingford, Conn.).
The women were led by juniors Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) and Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) who took home three first-place finishes each. Shelps was the winner in the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle and the 200 IM. DeVinney won the 100 and 200 butterfly as well as the 500 freestyle.
Courtney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.) won the 100 and 200 breaststroke while freshman Colleen Bower (Cumberland, R.I.) was the winner in the 1000 freestyle.
The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams return to the pool on Saturday, October 27 when they travel to Villanova. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
