WASHINGTON (September 23, 2006) – Euan Holden (Sugarland, Texas) scored his first career goal to secure the win for the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team as it defeated Georgetown, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at North Kehoe Field. With the win, the Huskies extend their unbeaten streak to six games and move their record to 5-2-2 on the year and an impressive 4-0-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas fall to 3-6-0 on the season and 2-3-0 in the conference.
In addition to Holden’s tally, O’Brian White (Scarborough, Ontario) and Chukwudi Chijindu (Fontana, Calif.) each scored second-half goals to fuel the Huskies’ largest offensive output of the season.
UConn dominated possession in the first half, holding the ball about 70 percent of the time, but was unable to piece together a legitimate enough run to put the ball in the back of the net. Priestley and Toni Stahl (Tuusula, Finland) teamed up for two scoring attempts in the period, as Priestley sent a corner kick into the center of the box that Stahl knocked wide right in the 19th minute. Two minutes later, the pair ran through a similar scenario as Priestley placed a free kick restart inside to Stahl who headed it beyond the left post.
Both teams came out a little harder in the second period, with Georgetown posting a narrow 9-8 advantage in the period to even up the output at 12-all in the contest. The consistent push forward by the Huskies’ attack looked like it was going to pay off in the 51st minute when White knocked the ball across the center of the goal mouth to Chijindu who was by the left post about two yards out, but sent the shot sailing high over the crossbar.
Just two minutes later, the Huskies made up for it as Priestley played the ball up the right side of the field to White who sprinted through the penalty area and sent a shot across the box into the lower left corner of the goal to put UConn on top, 1-0, in the 53rd minute. UConn then bumped the lead up to 2-0 just four minutes later off their fifth corner kick opportunity of the match. Priestley sent the ball into play from the left corner to White who headed it forward to Chijindu
The Hoyas cut the lead in half in the 65th minute when Scott Larrabe was fouled inside UConn’s box by the Husky defense. Ricky Schramm nailed the ensuing penalty kick, sending into the far right corner of the goal, just beyond the reach of UConn’s keeper Sangeloty. The goal fueled Georgetown’s attack as it doled out six shots in the latter portion of the second period, as opposed to just three before the score.
Feeling little bit of pressure, UConn stretched the lead back to two in the 77th minute with Holden’s tally after he and Chijindu brought the ball upfield against four Hoya defenders. Chijindu one-touched it over to Holden, who beat Georgetown’s keeper Joe Devine and sent the ball deep in the back of the net.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium with a 7:00 game against in-state rival Yale. UConn is 30-25-3 all-time vs. the Bulldogs, though the two teams have not faced each other since the 2003 season.
