Men's Tennis Gets 5-2 Win Over Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. (Septemeber 20, 2006) – The University of Connecticut men’s tennis team defeated Rhode Island, 5-2, on Wednesday, Sept. 20 in Kingston, R.I.
UConn got things started in doubles with sophomore Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass.) and freshman Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) winning an 8-6 match over Almstron-Simmons. Junior Nate Carvalho (Freetown, Mass.) and junior Aaron Ribchinsky secured the doubles point for the Huskies with a win at No.3 over Costin-Duffy, 8-4.
In singles action, Schueler got a big win over Almstrom (7-6, 1-6, 6-3) at No.1. Junior Christian Malerba (Derby, Conn.) defeated URI’s Simmons at No.4, 6-4, 6-2. Carvalho got a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No.5 over McGuire while sophomore Jeff Klar (Marietta, Ga.) won 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at No.6 over Marsello.
At No.2, Goldstein dropped a 6-4, 6-4 match to Costin while sophomore Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was defeated by Gart at No.3, 6-3, 6-3.
Michaels-Malerba fell at No.2 doubles to Gart-McGuire, 8-5.
The Huskies are back in action Sept. 29 as they host the UConn Invite.
