Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (September 15, 2006) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team fell to Minnesota, 3-0, in its first match of the Minnesota Diet Coke Classic on Friday, Sept. 15, Minneapolis, Minn.
The Gophers (4-4) took an early lead in game one to go up 2-0, but the Huskies (8-2) scored three of the next five points to cut the lead to 4-3. Minnesota answered with nine points to make the score 11-5. After four straight points by UConn, the score read 11-9 but the Gophers were too much as they took game one, 30-17, off a Kelly Schmidt kill.
Game two saw the Huskies leading 12-11, but after the team exchanged points, Minnesota went on a 6-0 run to give them a 27-13 edge. UConn scored three of the next four points to make it 28-16, but the Gophers closed out the game 30-19.
In game three, UConn held a 12-10 before Minnesota fought back to take the lead, scoring six of the next seven points. The Huskies kept things close, cutting the lead to 28-26 before the Gophers took game three, 30-26.
UConn was led by junior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) who registered 10 kills. Senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) came up with seven kills while freshman Devon Farrell (Lafayette, Calif.) and sophomore Lorelle Schaub (New Brighton, Minn.) each had four kills.
Freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) finished with 16 digs while freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) added 27 assists and nine digs on the night.
The Huskies take on Dayton in game two of the Minnesota Diet Coke Classic tomorrow, Sat. Sept. 16, at 11 a.m.
