Women's Track Wins New England Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (May 13, 2006) – With three more individual New England Champions, the University of Connecticut women’s track team accumulated 229.25 points and took home first place at the New England Outdoor Track Championships.
Junior Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.) competed in two events on Saturday afternoon. She became a New England Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:39.1. Sullivan was also a member of the 4x800 relay team that took second place in a time of 9:32.6.
UConn’s 4x400 relay team was the second Husky team to take first place at the championships. Freshman Alyssa Evering (Bel Air, Md.), freshman Mandela Graves-Fulgham (Shutebury, Mass.), junior Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) and sophomore Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) combined to finish first in a time of 3:42.1.
Highsmith also competed in the triple jump and high jump. She picked up her third individual title of the championships with a first place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 12.28m. In the high jump, Highsmith finished second with a height of 1.70m.
In the javelin, freshman Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) took second place with a throw of 41.92m.
The Huskies will be next in action on May 26 and 27 at the NCAA Regional Championship.
