Softball Swept In Doubleheader By No. 18 Louisville

STORRS, Conn. (April 9, 2006) - Sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) had two hits and junior Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) knocked in a run, but the University of Connecticut softball team was swept by No. 18 Louisville in a doubleheader on Sunday at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. The Cardinals (26-5, 5-1) won the first game, 6-1, and dominated the second game of the afternoon with a 12-0 win in five innings over the Huskies (15-17, 4-6).
In the first game, Louisville picked up three runs in the top of the first inning on a double and a single and held onto that advantage until the home half of the fifth. As the third batter of the half-inning, freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) doubled to right field and Quan drove her in on a single as the next member of the lineup. The Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the seventh to close out the game.
Junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) took the loss for the Huskies in the circle. Giving up seven hits in seven innings of work, Michalczyk also struck out two batters during the game. Catherine Bishop had the win for Louisville after giving up just five hits and striking out six on the game.
The Cardinals showed their offensive power in the second game, scoring three runs in the top of the first, five more in the second and four in the third for the 12-0 five inning victory. Louisville had 11 hits off of three UConn pitchers in the game, including two home runs and one double. The Huskies were able to muster just two hits in the game and also committed four errors.
Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) took the loss for the Huskies in the second game. She gave up three hits in one-third of an inning of work and was followed in the circle by freshman Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, N.Y.). Crossin scattered three hits in one and a third innings and also struck out three batters.
Sophomore Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) pitched the remaining three and a third innings of the game, giving up just five hits and striking out two batters while allowing no runs.
The Huskies will be in action next on Tuesday, April 11 when they host Hofstra at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
