SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 28, 2006) - The University of Connecticut softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader at Syracuse on Friday evening with game scores of 12-2 and 5-2. With the losses, the Huskies are now 18-27 overall and 5-13 against BIG EAST competition while the Orange improve to 33-19 overall and 14-6 in the conference.
In the first game, UConn spotted Syracuse three runs in the first inning and six more in the second inning before scoring. In the top half of the third inning, freshman Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) singled to left field with one out and advanced to second base on a single by sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) to have a runner in scoring position. Each runner moved up a base on a wild pitch and both then came around to score on a single by sophomore Christine Keeton (Spokane, Wash.). Those would be UConn's only runs of the game as the Orange added three more in the fourth to close out the win.
Junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) took the loss in the circle for UConn, giving up six hits and five earned runs in one inning of work. Sophomore Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) was the second Husky pitcher to see action in the game, scattering seven hits while giving up six earned runs in three innings of work.
UConn got on the scoreboard first in the second game, picking up two runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Gendron doubled to right center field and then came around to score on a single by freshman Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.). A single by Keeton advanced the freshman to second and another single, this time by junior Kristina Tolles (Southington, Conn.) brought her around to score.
However, Syracuse scored twice in the home half of the inning and UConn could not answer back with any more runs throughout the game. The Orange picked up one more run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth for the victory.
Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) took the loss for UConn in game two. She went the complete six innings, striking out eight batters while scattering seven hits.
The Huskies will be in action next on Sunday, April 30 when they travel to Pittsburgh for a BIG EAST doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
