STORRS, Conn. (April 26, 2006) - The University of Connecticut women’s track and field team held its academic awards reception on Monday, April 24, to honor the host of academic accolades bestowed upon the team during 2005. Professor Sam Pickering from the English Department spoke to the team, not only to offer his congratulations for its achievements in the classroom, but also to share his thoughts on sport, education, and life.
After a brief question and answer, Professor Pickering and Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes counselor John Miceli presented the awards. During the 2005 spring semester, 21 student-athletes received a 3.0 or higher grade point average; 11 of those athletes were also named to the Deans list. This past fall, 24 of the team members earned 3.0 GPAs or higher, while 11 were subsequently named to the Dean’s list. In addition, the members of the women’s cross country team, who are also members of the track and field team, were recognized for their Academic All-American award. This is the third consecutive year that the cross country team has earned this honor.
The track and field staff and team would like to thank Professor Pickering and John Miceli for their time and efforts in creating such a special event.
