Women's Track Finishes First In Fourth Consecutive Meet

STORRS, Conn. (April 22, 2006) – The University of Connecticut women’s track team picked up its fourth consecutive meet victory on Saturday afternoon.  The Huskies competed in rain and wind to come out on top with 230 points.  Brown University finished second with 153 points and Rhode Island took third with 64.5 points.
Connecticut took first place in 10 of 19 events at the UConn Invitational.  Sophomore Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) captured the top spot in two events.  She took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.03.  She also placed first in the high jump with a height of 1.70m.  She also competed in the triple jump in which she took second place and the long jump in which she finished third.
Freshman Jessi Foreman (Wayland, Mass.) finished in first place in the 100 with a time of 11.85.  Following closely behind were classmates Kara Budd (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) and Monique Hodges (Wethersfield, Conn.) who took second and third place, respectively.  Budd also ran in the 200 in which she placed first at 24.68.  Fellow freshman Alyssa Evering (Bel Air, Md.) took second in the event with a time of 25.04.
In the 400 hurdles, junior Marlene Priest (South Dennis, Mass.) placed first with a time of 1:03.65.  Freshman Kaitlyn Whitlock (Bethel, Conn.) took second place in 1:04.78.
In the 3,000 steeplechase, Orlaith Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) ran a season-best 11:10.87 to capture second place.  In the 5,000, she finished fourth with a time of 17:50.47.
UConn took first place in both relay events.  In the 4x100, the team raced in a time of 45.88 and in the 4x400 it finished in 3:52.73.
In the field events, junior Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) took first place in the long jump with a distance of 5.84m.  In the shot put, freshman Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) threw a distance of 13.53m to take first place.  Martin also competed in the javelin and took second place.
UConn swept the top-two spots in the hammer throw.  Sophomore Erin Donnelly (Barrington, R.I.) placed first with a throw of 48.88m and junior Cassie Buckwalter (New Wilmington, Pa.) took second with a throw of 47.98m
The Huskies will next compete in the Penn Relays held on April 27-29.
