EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (April 13) -- Three University of Connecticut men's tennis players, Joey Michaels, Christian Malerba and Craig Helstowski, gritted out singles wins in super-tiebreakers to propel the Huskies past Boston University, 5-1, on Thursday afternoon. UConn improves to 5-10 on the year while the Terriers fall to 9-5.
The match started in Storrs at the UConn Tennis Courts but was moved to the East Hartford Racquet Club due to rain. With limited court availability, the No. 4 singles match was not contested and the top doubles match was suspended once UConn had clinched the overall point with two wins.
Doubles saw 8-3 UConn victories at the lower two positions to gain the point. Malerba and Michaels got the win at No. 2 while Nate Carvalho and Michael Bobitski came through at No. 3. In singles play, Aaron Ribchinski got UConn a perfect, 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 and the Huskies also took a trio of third-set matches. Michaels (No. 2), Malerba (No. 3) and Helstowski (No. 5) all lost their first sets by wide margins but rallied to win their second ones, comfortably, setting up super-tiebreakers. Michaels took his 10-7 while Malerba and Helstowski were 10-8 victors.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday when they play host to Rutgers at 2:00 p.m.
