Softball Drops Two At Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (April 1, 2006) - The University of Connecticut softball team fell in both games of a double header at Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies fell in the first game, 9-0, in five innings and were no-hit in the second game, falling 2-1 in eight innings. UConn is now 14-13 overall on the season and 4-2 in the BIG EAST while Notre Dame is 16-10 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The Huskies were shutout in the first game after mustering just four hits in the loss. Notre Dame scored five runs in the home half of the first and two more in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to close out the victory. Freshman Sarah Newuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) had two of UConn's four hits in the game, including one double, but could not cross the plate for a run.
Junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) picked up the loss on the mound for the Huskies, scattering 11 hits in 3.1 innings of work. She now has a 6-6 record on the season. Sophomore Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) faced the final two Notre Dame batters of the game in 2/3 of an inning of work.
In the second game, the Huskies picked up one run but no hits in the loss. It was the second no-hitter of the season that the Huskies were on the losing end of, the first coming against North Carolina on March 17.
UConn's lone run came in the top of the sixth inning to knot the score at 1-1. Senior Kim Castner (Forked River, N.J.) reached base on an error to open the half inning and was then pinch run for by junior Kristina Tolles (Southington, Conn.). As the next batter up, senior Erica Pernell (Plainville, Conn.) was hit by a pitch and rewarded first base. Freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) walked to load the bases and Tolles came across the plate to score when freshman Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) was hit by a pitch.
Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) took the loss in the second game. giving up six hits in 7.2 innings of work while striking out four. Brittany Bargar had the no-hitter for Notre Dame.
The Huskies will be in action next on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Chicago to take on BIG EAST newcomer DePaul in a double header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
