HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 6) -- The University of Connecticut men’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Stonehill College, 7-1, on Monday afternoon in Hilton Head, S.C. The Huskies now stand at 1-4 on the year while the Skyhawks dropped their spring season opener.
The match followed the Division II scoring format which Stonehill regularly uses. UConn took two of the three doubles matches, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead instead of the standard 1-0. Craig Helstowski and Nate Carvalho teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 while Joey Michaels and Ben Scheuler won a tight, 9-8, match at No. 3.
In singles, UConn swept all five of the completed matches, all in straight sets. Sho Sato picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 while Helstowski posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2. Jeff Klar was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 3 while Christian Malerba won at No. 4 by a 6-0, 6-4 count. Michaels was a 6-2, 6-1 victor at No. 6. UConn was cruising at No. 5, but Scheuler had his match suspended due to time limits on the courts with the Husky freshman leading 6-3, 3-1.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday when they face Coastal Carolina.
