Women's Track Opens Outdoor Season At Miami

MIAMI, Fla. (March 18, 2006) – The University of Connecticut women’s track team opened the 2006 outdoor season with a solid outing at the Miami Invitational on Saturday. On the day, junior Lisa Kachmarsky (Monroe, N.Y.) tied the school record in the pole vault. She vaulted 3.50 meters to take third place in the event.
Also boasting a successful day for the Huskies was Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) who recorded a personal best time in the 100 hurdles. Highsmith finished fifth in the hurdles with a time of 14.47. Highsmith also competed in the triple jump, taking fourth place with a distance of 12.44. Highsmith was also part of the 4x400 relay team that finished sixth.
UConn’s distance runners had a successful outing in the 3,000 with a fourth and fifth place finish. Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.) placed fourth with a time of 10:25.20 and sophomore Orlaith Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) took fifth with a time of 10:31.84.
In the 400 hurdles, junior Marlene Priest (South Dennis, Mass.) placed fifth with a time of 1:02.48. Freshman Kaitlyn Whitlock (Bethel, Conn.) took eighth in the same event with a time of 1:04.28.
In the 400 dash, freshman Mandela Graves-Fulgham (Shutesbury, Mass.) finished in ninth place and senior Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) placed 14th.
In the sprints, the freshmen class competed with top-20 finishes among over 40 participants.
In the high jump, freshman Rachel Porter (Watertown, Conn.) captured fourth place with a jump of 1.65m and Highsmith took fifth.
In the throwing events, sophomore Erin Donnelly (Barrington, Ill.) took third in the hammer throw and freshman Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) took fifth in the javelin.
The following Huskies qualified for the BIG EAST Championship: Jessica Foreman (100m); Monique Hodges (100m); Mandela Graves-Fulgham (400m); Jennifer Rogers (400m); Jillian Sullivan (3,000m); Orlaith Cunningham (3,000m); Tamara Highsmith (100m hurdles, triple jump, high jump); Marlene Priest (400m hurdles); Rachel Porter (high jump); Lisa Kachmarsky (pole vault); Leah Williams (pole vault); Amanda Martin (shot put, javelin); Erin Donnelly (hammer throw)
The Huskies will compete again on March 24 in the Raleigh Relays.
