Women's Track Prepared To Compete In BIG EAST Championship

STORRS, Conn. (February 16, 2006) - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team will be competing this weekend at the 2006 BIG EAST Indoor Championships, held at the Athletics Field House on the campus of the University of Akron in Ohio.
After seven meets to prepare and qualify, 24 Huskies will compete in 15 different events at the championship.
“After dominating regional competition, we are focused on meeting the challenges of one of the finest track and field championships in the country,” said Head Coach Bill Morgan. “Our student-athletes are fully engaged in the significance of this meet and are prepped for outstanding performances. With 16 teams, positions will be ultimately be determined by top first or second place finishes. Regardless, the women on our team will demonstrate the effort necessary for a championship meet.”
UConn has had a strong hold over sprints and horizontal jumps in this season’s meets. In this weekend’s championships the team will to take its best opportunities for scoring in these events.
“School record holder Jessica Foreman (Wayland, Mass.) will lead the sprint group while NCAA provisional triple jump qualifier Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) is projected to score big in her specialty along with the pentathlon,” said Morgan. “Opportunities are there for everyone – there are no doubts in my mind the team’s willingness to perform at a high level.”
The two-day event will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 18, with events slated to continue through 5:40 p.m. ET. Sunday's events will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the awards ceremony at 3:00 p.m. ET will conclude the weekend.

Following this weekend’s competition, the Huskies will be in action next on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25 when they travel to Boston, Mass. for the New England Championships.
