INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (November 6, 2006) - The University of Connecticut men’s soccer team will start its quest for the 2006 NCAA College Cup against Fairfield in the opening round of tournament action Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1:00 p.m. in Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. This marks the ninth consecutive trip to the College Cup and 27th overall for the two-time NCAA National Champion Huskies.
The winner of Saturday’s game will take on No. 15-seed Towson on Wednesday, Nov. 15. The Tigers did not put in a bid to host tournament action, so the Huskies could earn a second-round home game in Morrone Stadium.
UConn wrapped up the regular season ranked No. 21 with a 10-5-2 overall record and an 8-2-1 mark in the BIG EAST, finishing second place in the conference’s Blue Division. They went on to the BIG EAST Quarterfinals where they fell to eventual tournament champion St. John’s, 1-0.
Fairfield enters the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last seven years with a 14-5-1 record after winning the MAAC Tournament and earning the conference’s automatic bid.
For the sixth-straight year, the BIG EAST Conference has at least five teams in the field of 48-teams in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship and for the second consecutive year, the league landed a record seven teams in the championship field. West Virginia and Notre Dame earned the sixth and 12th seeds, respectively, while Cincinnati, Providence, Rutgers and St. John’s all earned at-large bids.
Duke earned the top seed in this year's NCAA Championship, followed by Wake Forest, SMU, Virginia and defending champ Maryland to round out the top five spots. The Atlantic Coast Conference is the only other league to receive seven bids to the tournament, with six of the schools earning seeded positions.
Tickets for the first round of the NCAA College Cup are available from the UConn ticket office by calling 877-AT-UCONN. All tickets are general admission and will be priced as follows: $8.00 for adults 18 and over and $5.00 for seniors, children and students.
