Swimming and Diving Split Dual Meet at Rutgers
Adrian Astiz and Tristan Jones post two wins each
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 4, 2006) – The University of Connecticut men’s swimming and diving team defeated Rutgers by a score of 160 to 140 to win their second straight meet of the season, while the women fell 123 to 166. The Huskies had a total of 13 first place and 16 second place finishes out of 33 events on Saturday afternoon at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center.
The men were led by Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) and Tristan Jones (Canberra, Australia) who posted two wins each. Astiz swept both the 100 and 200 butterfly events. Jones took the top spot in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
The women got first place finishes by Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.), Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.), Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario) and Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.). DeVinney was the top finisher in the 100 butterfly, Shelps won the 400 IM, Sanders topped the 500 freestyle, while Marianni placed first in the three-meter diving event.
Abed Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) and Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) also posted wins for the men. Kaaki won the 50 freestyle while Acquavito took first in the 200 breaststroke.
The Huskies return to the pool Saturday, November 11, when they will return home to face Army at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium, the women will begin at noon, while the men will start at 3 p.m.
