STORRS, Conn. (November 30, 2006) - The University of Connecticut softball team has signed Julie Towers and Melissa Lucas to National Letters of Intent for the 2008 softball season, head coach Karen Mullins announced Thursday.
“We are thrilled about the addition of Julie and Melissa to our university and softball program,” Mullins said. They both possess the necessary qualities we look for in meeting the expectations of being a UConn student-athlete. Julie and Melissa are both honor roll students and elite athletes. We are confident about the impact they will have on our team and are optimistic they will step up to the challenge of BIG EAST play.”
Julie Towers, from Goodlettsville, Tenn., will graduate from White House High School this spring. Over the past three years, Julie has earned multiple honors including being a three-time All-Sumner County Team, three-time All-Middle Tennessee Softball Coaches Association First Team, All-District 9AAA Team, All-District 8AA Team, two-time White House High School Most Valuable Offensive Player, and The Tennessean Newspaper’s All-Midstate Team. In addition to softball, Julie is also a three-time letterwinner in soccer.
“Julie’s solid offensive skills and proficient defensive experience will certainly benefit our program,” Mullins said. “Julie is a true competitor and loves the game of softball. She is the type of athlete who will give it her all and have no regrets. Julie is a gifted athlete but more importantly, she is a quality person.”
Melissa Lucas, a native of Methuen, Mass., will graduate from Central Catholic High School this spring. With three high school seasons under her belt, Melissa has accumulated numerous awards. She is a three-time Eagle Tribune All-Star who was also named Best Overall Freshman, Best Offensive Performer sophomore year, and Most Valuable Player junior year. Melissa is also a two-time All-Conference performer.
“An exciting addition to the Husky program, Melissa will add defensive versatility and a forceful swing to our offensive lineup,” Mullins said. “Melissa is known for her power at the plate and we look for her to build upon that reputation only now wearing a Husky uniform. She is another true competitor who loves to play and has the will to win.”
“I am proud to introduce Julie, Melissa and their families as new members of the UConn softball program,” Mullins added. “We look forward to their arrival.”
