STORRS, Conn. (October 8, 2006) - Guided by freshman Devon Farrell's (Lafayette, Calif.) 16 kills, the University of Connecticut volleyball team swept Seton Hall 3-0 (30-26, 31-29, 30-20) on Sunday, Oct.8, in Storrs, Conn.
The Huskies (13-6, 2-3 BIG EAST) started things off in game one to take a 3-0 lead behind a kill from junior Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and a service ace from freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.). Seton Hall would come back to take the lead at 7-6 after some help from Tricia Myers, but senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) had two straight kills to put UConn back on top at 8-7. The Huskies went on a 4-0 run with freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) behind the service line with Silver and Denson-Dorman adding a block. The Pirates scored three unanswered points to tie the game at 18-18 but a kill from sophomore Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) and a service ace from Seabaugh would give game one to UConn 30-26.
Seton Hall came out with intensity in game two and took a 6-4 lead after three straight kills form Allie Matters. A kill from Chambers would tie the score at 11-11 but the Pirates would use serves from Brianna Leisner to score four straight points. The teams battled back and forth with 15 ties and 10 lead changes in game two alone. With the score 28-28, Seton Hall came out of a time out to force a UConn attack error. Facing a Pirate game point, Silver came up with a huge kill and then followed it up with a block to set up game point for UConn. Farrell ensured game two for the Huskies with a kill at 31-29.
After the 10 minute intermission, the Huskies turned things up a notch to take a huge 13-4 lead with Silver having three kills and Farrell having a service ace in that time. Their backs to the wall, Seton Hall used a kill from Stacey Craighead and a service ace from Jennifer Procuniar to fight back with the score showing 17-11. Singer and Farrell each had two kills apiece late in the game to set up a service ace from junior Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C.) that would seal the game and match 30-20.
Silver had 12 kills on the day and hit an astounding .632 with three blocks. Chambers and Singer each chipped in eight kills while Denson-Dorman had 40 assists. Freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) had a good defensive effort with 22 digs. The team finished with 11 total team blocks.
