ERIE, Pa. (October 27, 2006) — Mercyhurst tallied three first period goals and never trailed as the University of Connecticut men’s hockey team dropped a 6-2 decision to the Lakers Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
The Lakers used the trio of Matt Pierce, Nick Vandenbeld and Ben Cottreau in the first period as each player notched a goal before intermission.
Less than two minutes into the second period, senior Trevor Stewart (Elk River, Minn.) recorded his first goal of the season to cut the deficit to just two goals. Fellow senior, Eric St. Arnauld (Marquette, Mich.) tallied an assist on the play as he led Stewart to a shorthanded breakaway goal.
Mercyhurst then followed with another stretch of three consecutive goals to extend its lead to five goals late in the second period.
With just 32 seconds remaining in the second period, sophomore Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) netted his fourth goal off the season and his team-leading sixth point of the season off a feed from Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.).
Husky sophomore goaltender Jon Anderson (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) was stellar in net as he shut down the Laker offense for the final 22 minutes of the game. Anderson finished the contest with a total of 12 saves in his first action of the season.
UConn returns to the ice Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. when the Huskies face Mercyhurst for the second time this weekend.
