UConn Swimming and Diving Scrimmage Brown
Huskies take 19 of 32 events in meet
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 18, 2006) – The UConn swimming and diving team won 19 of 32 events in dual meet against Brown University on Wednesday afternoon. The meet took place on the Brown campus at the Smith Swim Center and was not scored.
The men were led by Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) who placed first in the 200 butterfly, 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley.
Sophomores Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.), Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario) and Kristalynn Kempton (Glen Head, N.Y.) each won two events for the women. DeVinney swept both the 100 and 200 butterfly, while Kempton took both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Sanders won the 200 and 500 freestyle race.
Diver Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) swept both the one-meter and three-meter dive events. Sophomore Allison Coleman (New Canaan. Conn.) took second-place in both dive events. Junior Michael Clifford (West Islip, N.Y.) placed second in the men’s one-meter dive.
Michael Brocki (Westhampton, N.Y.), Abed Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia), Jules Alexandre (Wallingford, Conn.) and Stephen Kustra (North Huntington, Pa.) were also first-place winners for the men.
Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.), Heather Grieb (Manasquan, N.J.) and Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.) had first-place finishes for the women.
UConn swimmers and divers also placed second in 20 of the 32 events.
The UConn swimming and diving team will return to the pool on Saturday, October 21, for their “Annual Alumni Meet”. This meet will include a reunion of the 1995-96 New England and ECAC Championship team. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.
