STORRS, Conn. (October 14, 2006) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team fought hard but fell to St. John's 3-0 (30-26, 30-27, 30-24) on Saturday, October 14, in Storrs. Conn.
The Huskies (13-8, 2-4 BIG EAST) started game one with a kill from senior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) but St. John's (21-1, 6-0 BIG EAST) fought back to take a 4-3 lead behind kills from Hui Ping Huang. A kill by freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) would be the start of a 3-0 UConn swing that would tie the game at 8-8. A huge Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) kill followed by two consecutive service aces from freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) put UConn back on top 11-9. The Red Storm came back again but the Huskies answered with three straight kills with freshmen Devon Farrell (Lafayette, Calif.), Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) and sophomore Sarah Singer (Waukasha, Wisc.) each contributing one to take a 15-14 lead. St. John's used two kills late in the game from Caitlin Rimgalia to take game one 30-26.
UConn got off to a quick start in game two by racking up an early 5-1 lead highlighted by four straight kills with Farrell having two in that time. Isaac's third service ace of the day increased the Husky lead to 14-7. St. John's crept back in the game behind steady serving from both Huang and Kathleen Yee and tied the score at 16-16. Neither team could gain more than a two point edge late in the game and a kill from Chambers would tie the score again at 23-23. Patti Hardimon stepped up big for the Red Storm with two kills in the final five points to help St. John's win game two 30-27.
Game three stayed close in the beginning as there were eight tie scores and five lead changes. UConn went up 5-2 but St. John's came back to tie the game 5-5. A big block by sophomore Megan Frey (Chaska, Minn.) and Seabaugh would put the Huskies back on top at 8-7. The Red Storm used two kills from Huang to regain the lead at 11-8, but Seabaugh stepped up with a kill and service ace to close the gap at 11-11. A block by Silver and Denson-Dorman put UConn on top 16-15 but St. John's put together five straight points to regain the lead 20-17. Chambers had three kills late in the game, but it wasn't enough as the Red Storm took game three and the match 30-24.
