Men's Tennis Open Play at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. (October 13, 2006) - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team opened play at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Friday, October 13, with key wins from multiple players.
In flight B, junior Christian Malerba (Derby, Conn.) took a 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 match over Alex Nace of Fairleigh Dickenson while in that same flight, freshman Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) defeated Quinnipiac's Ryan Skolnick 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
Junior Nate Carvalho (Freetown, Mass.) cruised past Tom Moran from Holy Cross in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in flight C.
Sophomore Jeff Klar (Marietta, Ga.) took down Fairleigh Dickenson's Miroslav Piven 7-5, 6-0 while freshman Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) also got a win in flight D, defeating Jeff Gordon of Rhode Island 6-1, 6-0.
In flight A, sophomore Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich.) lost a 7-6, 6-2 match to Jon Fernando from Fairfield. Sophomore Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass.) fell 6-4, 6-4 to Henrik Almstrom of Rhode Island. Junior Aaron Ribchinsky (Ivoryton, Conn.) was defeated by Esteban Blanco from Fairleigh Dickenson 6-3, 6-3 in flight C.
Action at the Quinnipiac Invitational resumes on Saturday, Oct. 14.
