Swimming and Diving Sweeps Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 31, 2006) - Freshman Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) set a new pool record in the women’s 200 IM as the University of Connecticut swimming and diving teams defeated Holy Cross Monday night and The Hart Swimming Pool.
The men capped off the meet winning 149-129 marking them 6-1 on the season, while the women finished with a final score of 158-129 upping their standing to 4-2-1.
Shelps’ time of 2:09.84 in the 200 IM overtook the record which has been standing for almost 16 seasons.
Abed Kaaki (Ras Tarura, Saudi Arabia) tallied two first-place finishes for the Huskies in the men’s 100 butterfly (51.63) and 100 freestyle (48.15) events. Also adding wins for the men were Jared Goodman (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 200 freestyle (1:47.56), Chris Ferreira (Madison, Conn.) in the 50 backstroke (24.78), Nick Conrad (Olney, Md.) in the 50 freestyle (22.34), Tod Pesses (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) in the 100 backstroke (56.00) and Ryan Thompson (Branford, Conn.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.73). Kevin Thompson (Stamford, Conn.) picked up his first win of the season on the three meter dive with a score of 314.02.
Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) continued to dominate her events winning both the 100 IM (1:02.33) and the 100 freestyle (55.50). Junior transfer Juliet Paradine (Garden City, N.Y.) picked up a victory for the Huskies in the 100 butterfly (1:00.54). Kelly Recupero (Stratford, Conn.) scored her first win of the season in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.70. Lindsay Rogers (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Cassie Peterson (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored big for UConn winning the 50 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, respectively. Senior diving captain Lauren Jacob (Elmira, N.Y.) notched her first win of the season in the three meter dive (284.02).
The Huskies will wrap up their dual meet season on Saturday, February 4 at Army. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
