FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Sept. 28) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team defeated Fairfield, 3-1 (26-30, 30-26, 30-26, 30-26) on Wednesday evening. The Huskies (6-7, 0-2) were led by three players with 13 kills each.
In the first game, a stellar offensive performance was put forth by sophomore Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), who had six kills in the game. However, that did not prove to be enough, as the Stags (9-9) took the game.
UConn quickly rebounded, however, recording a hitting percentage of .324 as a team in the second game. Senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) picked up four kills in the game while classmate Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) had three kills.
Ashley continued her offensive onslaught in the third game of the match, recording six kills. Junior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) also shined for the Huskies in the game, recording five kills. The fourth game saw Crawley record four kills as the Huskies wrapped up the victory.
For the match, Chambers, Ashley and Crawley each had 13 kills. For Chambers, it tied her career-high, which she had set two times before as a Husky. Crawley also had five block assists and eight digs in the match while Ashley recorded one service ace and seven digs. Sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) had eight kills in the match, as well as one service ace and eight digs. Sophomore Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C.) had four service aces in the match, a career-high and just one shy of her entire 2004 total. The libero also picked up eight digs in the win.
Fairfield was led by Jazmin Pa'akaula, who had 15 kills in the match. Two other Stags recorded double-digit kills in the match.
The Huskies are next in action on Sunday, Oct. 2 when they will travel to Seton Hall for a 2:00 p.m. start.
