Men's Tennis Beats Hartford, 5-2

STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 27, 2005) – For the second straight match, the strength of the lower half of the University of Connecticut men’s tennis team’s lineup powered the Huskies to a team victory, as UConn downed Hartford, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the UConn Tennis Courts. With the win, the Huskies remain undefeated at 2-0 on the year.
The Huskies got the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Joey Michaels and Christian Malerba rolled to an 8-2 win at No. 2 while Joel Gameron and Ben Schueler teamed together for the first time and produced an 8-3 win at No. 3. UConn’s top team of Sho Sato and Craig Helstowski went down by an 8-1 tally to Doruk Baglan and Artur Muller of Hartford.
Just like in doubles, Baglan and Muller were the Hawks’ lone singles winners as easy victories at No. 3-6 gave the Huskies the overall victory. None of the lower four Huskies dropped more than two games in their two-set wins. Jeff Klar was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 3, Michels took down Joe Kunkle, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4, Nate Carvalho blanked Charles Reich at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0, while Michael Bobitski rolled to a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 6 for UConn. Even Malerba, playing an exhibition No. 7 match, took an 8-0 pro-set victory. Matt Stinson fell to Baglan, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 while Muller took the most competitive match of the day, beating Helstowski, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2.
The Huskies return to action on Friday through Sunday when they welcome 12 other schools to Storrs for the annual UConn Invitational.
