Volleyball Closes Out Weekend With 3-1 Loss At Cincinnati

Cincinnati, Ohio (Sept. 25) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team closed out its first BIG EAST weekend with a 3-1 (30-26, 30-26, 21-30, 30-19) loss at Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies (5-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) fell behind early in the first game, but battled through six ties as the two teams traded points before Cincinnati pulled ahead. Senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) led the way for the Hukies in the game with five kills while sophomore Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and senior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) each added three.
The second game saw the Huskies put up a 14-10 lead midway through. However, Cincinnati chipped away at that lead and eventually put away the match, 30-26. Crawley, Chambers and senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) each had three kills in the game.
Game three was all UConn. After the two teams tied the game six times in the early moments of the match, the Huskies put up a 9-8 lead and would not trail again in the game. Crawley and freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) each had four kills in the game while three other Huskies each picked up two kills.
Despite four kills by Singer and three more by sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.), the Huskies could not keep pace with the Bearcats in the fourth game, eventually falling, 30-19.
For the match, Crawley led the Huskies with 13 kills. She also had one service ace, 10 digs and four block assists. Singer and Chambers each had 10 kills in the match. Singer added four block assists and Chambers picked up three digs in the loss. In addition to her seven kills, Neelands had 43 assists and picked up 12 digs while Stewart also had seven kills and 10 digs.
Cincinnati was led by Jessie Nevitt, who had 17 kills. Myanna Hellsten added 14 kills and three other Bearcats recorded double-digit kills.
The Huskies are next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Fairfield for a 7:00 p.m. start.
