Volleyball Falls To Clemson, 3-1, To Open Season

Clemson, S.C. -- The University of Connecticut volleyball team fell to Clemson, 3-1, to open the 2005-06 season.
Senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) led the way for the Huskies (0-1) with 19 kills. She also had four digs in the match. Fellow senior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) had 15 kills, one service ace and 11 digs in the loss. Rounding out the class, Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) picked up six kills and 47 assists. Sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) also contributed offensively, picking up eight kills and three service aces while junior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) had four kills and three total blocks.
Brittany Ross led the Tigers (1-0) with 16 kills while Meghan Stanton had 13 kills and Jeannette Abbott chipped in 12. Clemson had three players with three service aces during the match, as Stanton, Anna Villinch and Courtney Lawrence all recording three.
The Huskies jumped out in front with a 30-22 victory in game one, but were edged by Clemson, 31-29 in the second frame. Clemson continued from there, taking the third and fourth games both by scores of 30-26 to capture the match.
UConn returns to action on Saturday at the Clemson Invitational with a match against Kentucky at 9:30 a.m. and then against Western Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
