PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 19, 2005) – Several members of the University of Connecticut men’s tennis team competed over the weekend at the Northeast Intercollegiate, hosted by Brown University.
Each of the seven Huskies to compete in singles dropped their opening matches and worked their way through consolation draws. Joey Michaels had the best second-half luck of the group, running the table in the back draw to place ninth in flight #7. After dropping his first match to Steve Coulis of Army, Michaels took pro-set victories over Marist’s Alain Boletta, Montreal’s Timothe Levasseur and Marist’s Jeff Nguyen, all by a score of 8-4. Mike Bobitski, Joel Gamoran, Jeff Klar, Christian Malerba, Sho Sato and Matt Stinson were all not as fortunate, finishing in 11th place or lower in their respective 16-member draws.
Doubles action was much friendlier to the Huskies as each of the school’s four tandems each won at least its first match. At #2, Sato and Craig Helstowski topped Brad Nelson and Ryan Lloyd of Lehigh before falling to a team from Army in the semifinals. UConn’s Stinson and Klar were 8-5 winners in their opening round match at #3 over Alexander Abji and Steve Kopf of Niagara before falling to St. John’s’ Claudio Halim and Morgan Bauer. The #4 flight saw Malerba and Michaels top teams from both Montreal and Army to advance to the semifinals. The Huskies fell there though in a tight 9-7 match to Hofstra’s Matt Schor and Robert Sforzo. Bobitski and Gamoran took down teams from Niagara and Bucknell to reach the final of the #5 doubles draw, but fell by an 8-5 margin to Alexandre Leone and Nicolas Thibault of Montreal.
