Volleyball Dominates URI, Close Out Weekend With Win

Kingston, R.I. (Sept. 17) - The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 3-0 (30-21, 30-13, 35-33) to close out the weekend at the University of Rhode Island Invitational.
The Huskies (5-5) opened the match with a definitive 30-21 victory in the first game. Freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) opened the match with six kills while seniors Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) and Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) each added five in the win. The second game was dominated by the Huskies, as UConn hit .500 for the game while Rhode Island hit -.121. Ashley had eight kills for the Huskies in that game while sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) picked up seven digs.
The third match proved to be the toughest for UConn, as the two teams traded points for the entire match. At one point, the Huskies were down by a score of 25-22 before battling back to knot the game at 26 all. After URI tied the match at 30, the two teams continued to trade points before two consecutive kills by Singer wrapped up the game and the match for UConn. Singer closed out the game with 10 kills.
For the match, Ashley led the Huskies with 17 kills and five digs. Singer had 16 kills on the match and Crawley added 11. Stewart had five kills while collecting 11 digs and senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) had 45 assists and eight digs. Sophomore Julie Pickard (Hillsbourough, N.C.) had 11 digs and two service aces on the day. At the conclusion of play, Crawley was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Rhode Island (5-7) was led by Jillian Bekke and Rachel Bello, who each had 12 kills. Ivy Zuidhof also had seven kills for the Rams.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they open BIG EAST play by traveling to Louisville. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
