Volleyball Falls To Yale, 3-0

Storrs, Conn. (Sept. 13) - The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team fell to Yale, 3-0 (30-25, 30-19, 31-29) on Tuesday evening in Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies (4-3) were led by senior Heather Ashley (Smithburg, Md.) who had 15 kills in the match. Sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) added 13 kills in the loss and had 14 digs. Stewart also recorded five assists. Freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) had seven kills while senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) had 38 assists and sophomore Julie Pickard (Hillsbourgh, N.C.) picked up 16 digs.
UConn opened the match strongly, with Ashley recording seven kills in the first game and Pickard collecting eight digs. However, the Huskies struggled offensively as a team, hitting just .109 in the first game and .114 in the second game loss as well. The third game proved to be the closest, as UConn opened up a 11-5 lead to open the game. Yale (2-1) chipped away at the lead before tying the game at 21 all. The two teams traded points back and forth throughout the rest of the match, with points coming off of long rallies from both teams. Yale prevailed to take the game, 31-29, and the match, 3-0.
The Bulldogs were led by Kali Nelson with 12 kills. Shannon Farrell had eight kills in the Yale win and also picked up 17 digs. Three Bulldogs had double digit digs in a match in which neither team dominated offensively.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when they travel to Kingston, R.I. for the Rhode Island Invitational. UConn will face Arizona at 12:30 p.m. and North Carolina at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
