Storrs, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team closed out the UConn Toyota Classic with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-22, 30-22) victory over Manhattan on Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion. It was the third victory for the Huskies in the tournament as they move to 4-2 on the season.
UConn was led by senior Heather Ashley (Smithburg, Md.), who continued her stellar play with 16 kills in the match. She also had ten digs in the Husky victory. Senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) and sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) each had nine kills in the match. Stewart also picked up 12 digs while Crawley had two blocks.
The Huskies never trailed in the first game of the match. The score remained close until sophomore Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C.) served the Huskies to a 15-11 lead, a lead that UConn would not relinquish. The second game proved to be a back-and-forth one, as the teams were tied four times before the Huskies opened up a 16-14 lead that paced them to the end of the match. It was again close in the third and deciding game, as the two teams traded points until the middle of the game when senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) served the Huskies to a 16-14 lead.
Manhattan (2-4) was led by Maggie Pfeifer with 16 kills. Megan O’Dorisio also had nine kills in the loss.
UConn returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when the Huskies host Yale University in Gampel Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
At the conclusion of the day's play, the UConn Toyota Classic All-Tournament Team was announced. Ashley, Neelands, Pickard and Stewart all earned spots for the Huskies after their excellent play throughout the tournament.
