Providence, R.I. (August 3, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team has been selected to finish seventh in the BIG EAST Conference according to a preseason poll of the league’s coaches.
The Huskies, who wrapped up last season with a 17-11 record, including an eight-match winning streak during the month of October which was the programs’ longest since 1998, finished 2004 in fifth place in the BIG EAST with a 6-4 conference record. UConn will look to improve on that finish under first-year Head Coach Holly Strauss and against a tough schedule in 2005.
Louisville, in its first season as a member of the BIG EAST, was picked to win the conference after receiving 12 first-place votes. In addition to Louisville, Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette and the University of South Florida have joined the BIG EAST, making the conference the largest NCAA Division I women's volleyball conference in the nation with 15 member institutions.
UConn opens the 2005 regular season on September 2 when they travel to Clemson, S.C. to participate in the Clemson Tournament. The Huskies will take on host Clemson at 5 p.m. EST.
