Huskies Split Twinbill With Villanova

STORRS, Conn. (April 9, 2005) - The University of Connecticut softball team salvaged a spilt in its BIG EAST doubleheader vs. Villanova on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wildcats 4-0 in game two following a 5-1 setback in the opener.
The Huskies move to 10-17 overall and 2-6 in the BIG EAST following the twinbill, while Villanova stands at 23-15 overall and 1-3 in the league.
UConn starting pitcher Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout in the game two win while striking out six.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in game two with a three-run second inning which was sparked by a two-out, two RBI double by senior Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, Conn.). Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) drove in UConn's initial run in the three-run second with an RBI single that scored Allie Gendron (Noblesville, Ind.), who opened the frame with a leadoff walk.
Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) accounted for UConn's final run in the 4-0 game two win with an RBI triple in the sixth.
Villanova starting pitcher Kristen Haynes was saddled with the loss for the Wildcats after allowing three runs and three hits over 1.2 innings pitched.
UConn loss in the opener was aided by four errors by the Huskies' defense that led to four unearned runs for Villanova.
The Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run shot by senior Kari Koller. Koller's home run tied the Villanova record for most round trippers in a career at 22.
UConn cut the margin to 2-1 when Jessica Quan scored on a two-out double by Suzy de Bary which landed just out of the reach of Villanova right fielder Allie Wisniewski.
Wisniewski put the game away for the Wildcats with a three-run blast in the top of the sixth, her team-leading fifth of the season.
Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) tossed seven innings while allowing just one earned run (four unearned) and striking out 10 en route to the loss.
Shannon Williams scattered four hits and allowed one run to earn the win for the Wildcats.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, April 10 when they host Rutgers in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. (ET) at the UConn Softball Field.
