UConn Pummels Holy Cross, 7-0

STORRS, Conn. (April 6, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak by pummeling Holy Cross, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. With the win, the Huskies improve to 4-5 this spring.
UConn swept through doubles play to take the point and then defeated the Crusaders in two sets in all but one singles match. Sophomore Matt Stinson (Orinda, Calif.) topped Brian Kelly, 6-2, 7-6, to open singles play. At No. 2, junior Sho Sato (Tokyo, Japan) defeated Nick Casolaro, 6-0, 6-3, while senior Sam Sutherland (Tampa, Fla.) won 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 over Mike Marano at No. 3.
Freshman Christian Malerba (Derby, Conn.) defeated John Deaver at No. 4, 7-5, 6-0. Senior Joe Mercuri (Wallingford, Conn.) and freshman Mike Bobitski (Fort Myers, Fla.) then breezed through their matches at No. 5 and 6, respectively. Mercuri bested Marco Lombardo, 6-0, 6-1, while Bobitski won 6-1, 6-1 against Rob Guido.
In doubles action, Stinson paired with Sato to beat Kelly and Marano, 8-2 at No. 1. Sutherland and Malerba then defeated Casolaro and Deaver, 8-3, while Mercuri and Bobitski handled Lombardo and Guido, 8-5.
UConn's men's tennis team will next travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers on Sunday, April 10 at 12:00 p.m.
