Huskies Split Twinbill With Rutgers

STORRS, Conn. (April 10, 2005) - Holly Calcagno's three hits in the second game helped the University of Connecticut softball team to a doubleheader split against Rutgers on Sunday at the UConn Softball Field. The Scarlet Knights took the opener, 2-1, but the Huskies shutout Rutgers in the nightcap, 5-0. With the split, UConn now stands at 11-18 overall on the year and 3-7 in BIG EAST action while the Scarlet Knights move to 1-27 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
The Scarlet Knights struck first when Kristen Madoch led off the opening game with a single to left. She advanced to second on a walk, third on a sacrifice bunt by Helen Smith and would score a batter later on a groundout to short by Jenny Card. The lead held up until the home half of the sixth inning when the Huskies tied the score. Mandy Schettini drew a one out walk and advanced to second when Calcagno was hit by a pitch. Schettini scored a batter later when Allie Gendron ripped a single past the glove of an outstretched Smith at third base.
Rutgers regained the lead in the seventh. Card led off with a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Christina Gillman, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hilary King. Maggie Geraldi followed by ripping a double into the right center field gap to plate Gillman. The Scarlet Knights would then load the bases with one out Jessica Gurney would strike out Xaymara Rodriguez and Madoch to end the threat. UConn went quietly in the bottom of the seventh against Jessica Crosby. The sophomore earned her first win of the year, allowing three hits and one run with two strikeouts and a pair of walks. Gurney took the tough game one loss for UConn, yielding a pair of runs on four hits despite striking out 11 with a pair of walks.
Game two saw the Huskies get on the board first. Stephanie DiBiase led off the frame by doubling down the left field line. Advancing to third on an Ashleigh Campen sacrifice bunt, DiBiase would score when Jen D'Angelo dropped in a bloop single to center field.
UConn broke the game open with three unearned runs in the fifth. Calcagno reached on an infield single and advanced to third on an error. Suzy de Bary drove her home with a double off of the center field fence. Gendron, on base after a fielder's choice, would score on an RBI ground out by DiBiase. The third run crossed as Campen drove a double over the head of Rutgers centerfielder Stephanie Johannsen. UConn picked up an insurance run in the home half of the sixth when Calcagno's single to center plated Schettini who was on base after doubling to the gap in right center field.
Michelle Caouette earned the win for UConn allowing three hits and three walks while fanning seven in the shutout. Gillman took the loss for Rutgers after allowing four runs on nine hits in five innings of work.
UConn will return to action on Tuesday when the Huskies host Massachusetts at 4:00 p.m.
