SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Apr. 1) -- The University of Connecticut softball team shutout Syracuse, 2-0 in game one and fell short by an 8-5 margin in game two in BIG EAST action on Friday afternoon. The Huskies record now stands at 7-14, 1-3 in the BIG EAST, while the Orange are 12-10 on the year, 1-1 in the conference.
UConn took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of game one as freshman Allie Gendron (Noblesville, Ind.) knocked a one-out double to center field. Sophomore Kristina Tolles (Southington, Conn.) then entered as a pinch-runner for Gendron and scored on a single up the middle by classmate Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.).
The Huskies added an insurance run in the seventh. Senior Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) led off the inning with a double to right center. Classmate Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, Pa.) then grounded out, advancing DiBiase to third. Senior Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, Conn.) followed with a walk and DiBiase scored on a passed ball for UConn’s second run of the contest.
Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout to pick up the win (6-5) for Connecticut. Courtney Mosch took the loss (6-6) for the Orange, allowing two runs, one earned, with one walk and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. Erin Downey relieved her and pitched two-thirds of an inning, recording two strikeouts.
In the second game of the afternoon, Tanya Rose belted a leadoff homer to give Syracuse an early 1-0 lead in the first. Mosch then drove in the Orange’s second run of the inning with a single to center. The hit scored Cassie Morales who reached base with a one-out single up the middle.
UConn rallied with two runs in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Sophomore Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) began the inning with a single. Senior Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) then popped out to shortstop and Gendron singled to third base, to advance Quan to second. Freshman Christine Keeton (Spokane, Wash.) fouled out and Calcagno followed with a two-out RBI single that plated Quan. Gendron recorded the Huskies second run, scoring on a passed ball with DiBiase at bat.
The Orange broke the game open in the sixth, however, bringing ten batters to the plate and scoring six runs on five hits. The Huskies managed to plate three runs in the seventh inning as de Bary and Gendron both posted RBI singles in the frame, but it was too little too late for UConn.
Junior Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, N.Y.) started game two for Connecticut but did not get the decision. She pitched 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Gurney relieved her and took the loss (6-6). She allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits with no walks and one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. Downey recorded the win (5-4) for Syracuse as she threw seven innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Connecticut is next scheduled to face Boston College on Sunday, April 3, at 12:00 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
